In this time of economic hardship, job losses, and home forclosures, it seems to be the right time to revist being closer to nature and becoming more self sufficient for our family’s future.

Also, a greenhouse certainly helps to produce vegetables year round in climates that are not extreme. So, go wild and experiment in your backyard, with vegetables, honeybees, fruit trees, and of course chickens for your egg and meat needs.

If you are looking for ideas on how to provide a home for your chickens, then this book might give you some useful ideas. It is about 45 different plans, and the word plans is used loosely, as it does not provide detailed instructions for building the chicken coops, but only floor plans. It is an idea book to help you design what you want in a chicken coop.

A little construction knowledge will certainly be valuable when you build one of these coops. But for the price, it’s worth it just for the ideas it will generate.

You’ll also find ideas for altering trailer’s, greenhouses, and of course sheds; low-budget ideas in working with used, recycled materials; also some simple ways to make waterers, feeders, and nestboxes. Many of the color photographs will provide other creative ideas to get you going.

One of the most common reason people are into poultry raising is to have laying chicken producing eggs. It is always rewarding to have fresh eggs from your own poultry.

There are many chickens than can produce eggs but few are considered to be the best egg-laying breeds on poultry raising. All hens are capable to producing eggs with the same nutrition however; there are some that have the ability to produce more superior eggs.

Leghorn is the most common laying chicken breed that is used for egg production. A Leghorn hen can produce as much as 300 eggs in a year. Other breeds are: Rhode Island Reds, Black Star, Red Star, Light Sussex, Plymouth Rock, Cuckoo Mara and Barred Rock.

When you start poultry raising in spring, you can find chicks in your local feed and poultry supply shops. There are also chicks sold online. But if you are just starting out, it is recommended to get your chicks locally where you can ask advice regarding poultry raising. Also, ask your supplier which among the breeds are easier to mange for beginners.

It is not necessary to have a rooster when you are raising chicken for egg production.

Prepare your coop for the chicken. As well as nesting boxes inside your chicken house. There should also be space where they be allowed to be free for few hours every day. Once they are accustomed to their place, they will return to their roost every evening.

When chicks are about 3 months old then you can start feeding them with grains and left over scratch. They would like to eat fruits and vegetables but avoid feeding them with meat or greasy foods.

Hens will start laying eggs when they are 6 months old. Your poultry can produce about 200-250 eggs per chicken in a year. However egg production is influenced by season and daylight. During winter months you can install light to extend the daylight which is usually done in the morning hours. Also, keep track of those chickens that are not producing eggs – which might be better for dinner. Take a look at “Incredible Chickens”, click here.

There are many reasons why people start poultry raising and one of the most important decisions to be made is what breed of chickens to raise. You might be raising chickens because of its meat, or for eggs or simply for the enjoyment of taking care of the fowl.

It is not easy to choose the right breed of chicken especially for those who lack experience. There is a wide variety of chickens that would make it more difficult for beginners to select the right one for them.

Egg Production

White Leghorn is a popular breed for white egg production. Those who prefer brown eggs usually choose Golden Comets and Red Sex Links. As a criteria, breeders usually associate breeds that have white ear lobes to produce white eggs an those with red ear lobes lay brown eggs. These types of chickens are poor producers of meat because of their small bodies. If you are going to start poultry raising because of egg production, select those breeds of chickens that are mainly used for laying eggs.

Meat Production

Most chicken used for meat productions are hybrids. There are breeds that grow faster within a few weeks but others are selected because of characteristics such as larger breast meat yield or disease resistance. These types of chickens do not lay as many eggs but rather are used mainly by companies that are selling broilers in supermarkets. Many breeders are choosing Cornish Cross since they can weigh 4-5 lbs in just 6 weeks and can reach 6-10 lbs in 8-12 weeks.

Dual Purpose

There are breeds of chicken that are raised for the purpose of meat and eggs. There are many of these that are American and English breeds. Most common are the Plymouth Rock, Sussex and Wyandottes. These types of chicken produce enough eggs and have the size for meat production. If you are in poultry raising because of egg and meat, then select those breeds of chickens that may not be superior in each characteristics but can give you both.

Many people are interested in building a chicken coop and start raising chicken. Some go into raising chicken simply because of a hobby. There are others who are motivated by profit. Whatever the reason behind it, it’s always wise to look for alternatives where you can spend less on a good investment.

There are benefits that reap when you build your own chicken coop. These benefits are the reasons why people decide to build a chicken coop. With a chicken coop in your backyard, you can have a supply of fresh eggs everyday!

You can also have a supply of fresh chicken meat, a source of low fat protein. Chickens sold in supermarkets are usually raised commercially and are given drugs to allow them to grow big in a short time. With your own chicken coop, you can guarantee that the meat you consume is drug free.

In addition, it will be a greater benefit if you have a garden. You can use the chicken manure as fertilizer. If you don’t need much of the fertilizer, there will be many in your neighborhood who can use it.

Chickens can be wonderful pets. No need to walk them in the park! There are more reasons why it’s a wise decision to raise chicken. Increase in the price of chicken has resulted in an increased desire for people to raise their own chicken for family consumption.

If you have decided to make your own chicken coop, the next thing you have to find out is how to build one. You have to ensure that your chicken will have the best living condition you can provide. Click here to find out more how to build a chicken coop.
