In this time of economic hardship, job losses, and home forclosures, it seems to be the right time to revist being closer to nature and becoming more self sufficient for our family’s future.

Also, a greenhouse certainly helps to produce vegetables year round in climates that are not extreme. So, go wild and experiment in your backyard, with vegetables, honeybees, fruit trees, and of course chickens for your egg and meat needs.

With the demand on greenhouses, there are already many companies that have offered commercial ones for farmers. If you decide on buying a commercial greenhouse, keep in mind that there is essential equipment to fully utilize the productivity provided by a greenhouse. When you go shopping for your greenhouse, make sure you have the following:

1.Commercial heater
Heat is important for a crops survival. Especially during winter months, it is necessary to install a heating system to ensure that your plants will have the required heat. When plants are exposed to cold air for a day, it will affect their productivity. During cloudy days, you will also need to have a heating system since greenhouses are designed to obtain heat from sunlight. Get a commercial heater to be install in your commercial greenhouse. Although it will be an addition to your expenses, rest assured that your productivity will be higher than the amount you spend.

2.Greenhouse Staging
Ensure that the greenhouse staging, the tables, racks, shelving, etc, that will be used on heavy loads is durable enough to withstand the loads. Commercial greenhouses will more likely to go through heavier loads compared to non-commercial greenhouses. You will have heavy benches, pots, trays and harvest.

3.Seed Tray Shelf
Space is limited inside the greenhouse. Seed trays will occupy wide space that should be intended for your crops. To increase more productivity, have a seed tray shelves where you can organize all the seed trays both saving space as well as making the greenhouse systematized.

4.Watering equipment
We always aim for high productivity. With a modern and automatic watering system, you can increase productivity of your greenhouse with less effort on your part. Many commercial greenhouses requires more time and energy to water the plants manually. Also, as human as we are, it is quite a challenge to remember the amount of water and which of the plants have been watered.

5.Thermometers
One of the crucial factors in maintaining an environment needed by the plant is the right temperature. Although with experiences that we have, our instinct can tell temperature. But when it comes to taking care of your plants, a slight difference in temperature can affect your crops productivity. Aside from this, you might get tired of watching over the temperature for the whole day. A thermometer is a must-have for your commercial greenhouse. There are automatic temperature controls that you can easily set the required temperature of your plants.

The whole system of a greenhouse is organized to provide the plant the right environment needed for the plant growth. With a greenhouse, you duplicate the natural system where the plants you have usually grow. It is your primary concern to supply the right amount of heat, sunlight, water and nutrients which will depend on the type of plant and its growth stage. As much as possible you have to go a step farther than what nature can do in optimizing the plants productivity at a minimum investment and input.

What are the inputs needed in starting a greenhouse? What do you have to give in order to benefit from abundant harvest? Operating a greenhouse would mean spending for heating, lighting and watering as well as pesticides and other nutrients added to support the fast growing and strong growth. You need to invest time and effort which of which you have a limited supply. So before you start on your greenhouse make sure that you have the commitment to spend the needed time to take care of your plants.

The whole greenhouse system is composed of different subsystem that needs to work harmoniously to provide the aimed environment. These subsystems are water, light, heat and nutrients. Each of these subsystems affects each other thus planning for each requires a consideration on how it will affect the whole greenhouse system.

Water is the medium that brings the nutrient from the roots to the different parts of the plants. Just like for humans, water is the basic need of plants. It is needed in the leaves as a primary ingredient of manufacturing plants food. Both the soil and the atmosphere in the greenhouse must be kept moist.

It is wise to invest in an automatic watering system since it is far more effective than manual watering. With the automatic watering system you can provide the right amount of water at a specific time interval based on the plant’s growth stage. You can control moisture in the air inside the greenhouse by misting. There are automatic misting systems available that you can purchase. If you are short of funds, you can save by collecting rainwater and pump it into your greenhouse.

A heating system requires higher investment. Study how you can control the temperature so you can adjust it depending on the need of your plant. Monitor carefully the temperature both inside and outside of the greenhouse.

Aside from heating, you have to monitor the light required by your plants. It is usually free however during winter season you might need to have an artificial light to lengthen the plants light exposure. During summer, shade is also essential since some plants can easily burn in a greenhouse.

Plants require nutrients to have the best result in your plants growth. Many greenhouse owners use the hydroponic system where the roots are suspended in a solution containing the needed nutrients.

When these subsystems are working jointly, you will have lesser effort in preventing pest and diseases.

Your greenhouse can be your own sanctuary. And you have the control on how to make it a wonderful place. You can make it a place for you to relax and relieve the stress brought by daily routines. If you are really interested in starting your own greenhouse, you need to invest on something that you can enjoy and be satisfied with. There are lots of benefits you can reap from having your own greenhouse.
Buying seeds can be expensive when you get into serious gardening. But when you have your own greenhouse, you can collect the seeds from your own garden and keep them in the greenhouse. This will save you a lot of money especially during the spring season. With the time you have invested in your greenhouse, you will soon realize how many seeds you can have from your own garden. You don’t have to rely on commercial growers.

Even as just a hobby, you can expand gardening all throughout the year. You can enjoy taking care of plants which before you could only grow during spring. You have a wider selection of plant varieties which you can cultivate. Even during winter months, it is possible to grow tropical plants.

Almost everyone has been trying different ideas on how to lower household expenses or increase income. With your own greenhouse, you can have a supply of fruits and vegetables that will result in saving on your grocery bill. Harvesting your own fruits, vegetables and herbs also mean you have a supply of fresh food for your family.

We are used to getting our food delivered to our doorstep ready to eat. But imagine the pleasure your family will feel once they realize the effort you had in taking care of the plants until it bear fruits and your preparation for their meal. Also, those vegetables and fruits that are sold in supermarket taste poorly compared to fresh ones harvested in your greenhouse.

Your entire family can have the pleasure of having a greenhouse. Share your passion with your children. You can even spend quality time with them when they help you take care of the plants. Each member of the family can have his/her own area in the greenhouse or each can be designated to handle certain type of plants.

Cick here for many easy to assemble greenhouses and start enjoying the benefits.

Growing plants in a greenhouse requires some tricks in order to produce healthy and strong crops. The following are few tips for greenhouse gardening.

•	Make a special bed for corn where you can plant it directly into the ground. In order to save space in your greenhouse, plant pumpkins between the corn.

•	Crushed egg shells can help add nutrients to the soil. Put eggshells in different areas of your greenhouse. Also, coffee grounds can increase soil acidity.

•	If you are using tap water to your plants, let it stand for a day to clear the chlorine present in the water. Use water that is at room temperature.

•	When planting seeds, avoid frequent watering. Too much water may cause the seed to float to the surface of the soil and that would affect its germination.

•	Have a space where you can do the preparation separate from the growing area. Having an organized greenhouse will have a positive effect on your plants growth.

•	Vegetables that need bigger spaces in between rows are beans, cabbage, pepper, cantaloupes, squash, tomatoes and watermelon.

•	Mix vegetables. Put together plants from different families which have different needs to minimize competition on soil, water and nutrients.

•	Dig at least two feet for plants that grow deep in the soil such as onions, carrots and beets. This will help the plants grow large under the soil.

You can have different plants – fruits, vegetables or flowers –in your greenhouse. However, the choice of plants will determine the type of greenhouse that you have to build. So before you can purchase or build your greenhouse, it is important to fully understand the plant you are planning to have. Different plants require different needs.

One of the important materials you must have is the right soil for your plants. Essential components of good soil for planting seed include compost, potting soil, and small amount of sand.

Look for containers. There are many kinds that are available in your local garden center. If you are short of funds, you can recycle tin cans, milk cartons and plastic cups. Keep the black plastics from nurseries that were used as plant containers.
Aside from your own comfort, benches inside the greenhouse can be use as stand to hold the trays containing seedlings. So when you are working on your greenhouse plan, make sure to put space for benches.

Have a natural insecticide in your greenhouse. Plant herbs in your greenhouse which can drive off pest. You can use onions or garlic mixed in water as insecticide.
Tools that you need are air coolers that will be use in hot summer to control the temperature. Power vents are also effective idea to keep the place cool. You might invest in tools such as humidifier, CO2 generator and a mister.

A must have tool for the winter months is the greenhouse lighting system. Artificial light such as High Intensity Discharge Lighting (HID) is popularly use in greenhouses. HID is a low cost alternative when there is a lack of natural sunlight during winter. With the use of HID, the growth of your plants are stimulated and there is an improvement in plant strength and health. Take note that HID lighting is more powerful than regular fluorescents.

There are different types of greenhouses. There are many factors that can affect your choice of a greenhouse. What is the main purpose of your greenhouse? Would you prefer to have a large or small one? What is the condition of your garden? Is it exposed to strong winds or do you have local wild animals in your area?

Cost can affect the type of greenhouse that you are going to construct. There are greenhouses that can provide your plants the best environment but can also mean higher expenses. If you are short on budget, there are alternatives that you can spend less on without compromising the quality of your greenhouse. It may be helpful to check local establishments such as hardware store for available greenhouse models.. You can acquire valuable information that can help you weigh the pros and cons of each alternative.

Greenhouses are divided according to temperature control and structural design.
Types of greenhouse according to temperature control purpose:

•	Hot Greenhouse – This is mainly used to grow tropical and exotic species of plants. The temperature is maintained at an average of 65 degrees. If you are living in a cold area, you will need to install lighting and heating to provide for the needs of the plants.

•	Warm Greenhouse – A warm greenhouse has a temperature around 55 degrees which can facilitate the growth of a wider variety of plants. However, during the winter season, you might need to have heating and lighting equipment.

•	Cool Greenhouse – This type of greenhouse does not need any heat or light since it maintains a temperature of 45-50 degrees. Seedlings or other types of plants that do not need higher temperature are grown in this kind of greenhouse.

Types of Greenhouse according to structure:

•	Lean to – A popular type of greenhouse that is used because of limited space. This type can be attached to a larger building, your house or garage will do.

•	Detached – A stand alone structure that does not need support of another building. However, this type can be connected to a work area or another greenhouse.

•	Ridge and Furrow or Gutter Connected – This type of greenhouse can be build with curved arches which can be attached on the edge of the roof or gutter.

This practice has been used going back to the time of Romans who were recognized as the first who built a structure for the purpose of protecting plants. But what is the difference between using a greenhouse and planting your garden directly in the ground? Why would you consider building a greenhouse instead of using raised beds for your plants where it can be exposed to the fresh air and direct sunlight?

Also known as a glasshouse or a hothouse, a greenhouse is a structure where you can grow your plants including vegetables, flowers and fruits all year long. The plants as well as the soil benefit from the suns radiation where the air inside the greenhouse is warmed by the roof and walls.

A greenhouse supports plants growth because of the heat provided inside the structure. How does the greenhouse capture the heat? Greenhouses have special glass which serves as a path way to transmit spectral frequencies that warms the plants. The energy and heat that are captured by the glass are used to warm the air which causes the heat to stay within the greenhouse.
Although the concept was already present during the ancient times, the term greenhouse was first used during the 17th century. People used to believe that heat was more vital to plants growth than was light. After a few years, the design of a greenhouse was developed. A major contribution was brought by Joseph Paxton who built a Palmhouse in 1842.
With a greenhouse, you can control the temperature, humidity, and light according to your plants’ needs. You have the control on your plants environment empowering you to extend the season of specific plants.
Gardeners prefer a greenhouse because of the many benefits. You can manipulate the conditions of plants as well as protecting them from the outside elements. Greenhouses can also help in preventing pests and diseases. This is a promising method for the elderly and disabled because of the smaller area compared in growing crops in the field.

To build a greenhouse seems to be difficult to ordinary people. At first how to build one may seem complicated. However, contrary to what most believe, it is very easy to build a greenhouse if you have the enthusiasm for it.

Why would you build one? Some have greenhouse because of the pleasure they get from having one. It can give you comfort to see you plants, vegetables, and flowers. Every time you visit your own sanctuary, you can always be proud of the fruits of your effort and time.

If you want to build a greenhouse, go over these basic points you need to know before you start on your project.

1.	Second hand material
Especially if you are planning to build a large greenhouse, consider using salvage materials to lessen the cost. Have time to gather those that you have at home and see where they can fit in your plan.

2.	Climate
What is the climate of the place that you live? If you are in a cold climate area, the best suited is an insulated greenhouse. Having an insulated greenhouse will provide your plants the warmth and heat they need. Otherwise, if you’re place is usually warm, have a greenhouse with shade control will be the best one to build.

3.	Right environment
Before making a plan for the greenhouse, it is expected that you have in mind what kind of plants you will have. Then have the proper environment suited for your plants. Prepare the proper ventilation, pest control, soil, heater, humidity control and air circulation devices.

4.	Location
One primary aspect to decide is the location. Place your greenhouse where there is enough sunlight. The east-west part of your place will be more expose to sunlight. It is appropriate especially if you plan to have vegetables and fruit bearing plants.

5.	Covering
If budget is not a problem, go for fiberglass or glass made coverings. These will last longer and allows more humidity and warmth. However, if you are tight on budget, you can go with plastics. But think it over since a glass covering is a good investment for greenhouse.

6.	Foundation
You have flexible choices for foundation. If you want a secured foundation, go with concrete. There are also inexpensive foundations where some uses railroad ties. You can be more resourceful on choosing the foundation.

7.	Accessories
Have you thought of ways to make your greenhouse more comfortable? Add some benches, heating system, watering systems or other automatic equipment that you want to have.

8.	Pest control
An important point, there are “good bugs” that you can use to control the “bad bugs”. In case you find a bug in one of your plant, immediately put it outside the greenhouse so it won’t affect the other plants.

9.	Storage
When you plan a greenhouse, don’t forget to set aside a space where you can store your fertilizer, soil and other tools. Plan out how you can keep things in order inside the greenhouse,.
